What is an AI platform? Explained simply.
An AI platform is the shared foundation on which a company runs AI applications with its own data: search, assistants and chatbots use the same knowledge, the same permissions and the same language model. This guide explains the building blocks and helps you choose.

Key takeaways
- An AI platform connects your data sources, a language model and applications such as search and assistants in one place.
- Unlike a single AI tool, it manages permissions, logs and deletion periods centrally.
- It runs as a provider’s hosted service or on your own servers.
- What matters when choosing: source citations, model choice, data location and export options.
What is an AI platform? The definition.
An AI platform is software that makes company knowledge usable for artificial intelligence. It reads documents from drives, wikis and systems, prepares them for search and lets a language model write answers from them. This method is called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG.
The difference to a public AI chat: the platform answers from your sources, shows where it found the answer and respects who may see which documents. Many applications run on one platform, from the internal knowledge assistant to the chatbot on the website.
The six building blocks of an AI platform.
Connectors
Connect drives, SharePoint, Confluence and other sources and keep them current.
Search index
Splits documents into passages and finds the right ones for every question.
Language model
Writes the answer from the passages found, ideally of your choice.
Assistants
Applications with their own task, sources and tone.
Permissions and logs
Roles, teams, audit log and deletion periods for every application.
Channels
Web app, website widget, API and mobile: the same assistant everywhere.
AI platform, AI tool or chatbot?
| AI tool | Chatbot | AI platform | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | one task, e.g. writing text | answer questions in one channel | many applications on a shared foundation |
| Own data | mostly by upload only | often a fixed knowledge base | connected sources, kept current |
| Permissions | per account | mostly none | roles, teams, projects |
| Evidence | rarely | rarely | sources and audit log |
What companies use an AI platform for.
Knowledge assistant for everyone
“How do I apply for parental leave?”: the answer comes from the HR handbook, with a link to the page.
Support and service
The service team finds solutions from tickets and manuals in seconds.
Chatbot on the website
Customers ask around the clock; the assistant only answers from approved content.
Search across all sources
One search across drive, wiki and intranet instead of five separate search boxes.
AI platform as a hosted service or on your own servers?
As a hosted service the provider runs the platform; you start at once and need no IT team. On your own servers you keep data and operations in-house, up to running without internet, in return your team looks after updates and backups.
Look at the location: where is the data centre, where is the provider based, and which sub-processors are there? The AI platform RAGSuite runs in the RAGSuite Engine or on your server, with the same features.

Questions about AI platforms.
What is an AI platform, explained simply?
An AI platform is software that makes a company’s knowledge usable for AI. It connects data sources, a search index and a language model. Applications such as internal assistants, search or a website chatbot run on it. All of them use the same knowledge, the same permissions and the same rules for logs and deletion.
What is the difference between an AI platform and an AI chat?
A public AI chat answers general questions from its model’s knowledge. An AI platform answers questions from your own documents, names the source and respects access rights. You also decide data location, language model and deletion periods. Many platforms can use a model from the same provider as one building block.
What does RAG mean?
RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. The platform first finds the right passages in your documents and passes them to the language model. The model writes the answer from them and points to the source. That keeps answers current, checkable and specific to your company, without training a model.
Does an AI platform need its own GPUs?
Not necessarily. With a hosted service the provider supplies the computing power. On your own servers you only need GPUs if you want to run a language model locally. If you use an external model through an interface, normal servers are enough for the platform and search index. The choice depends on data protection rules and user numbers.
How long does it take to introduce an AI platform?
In RAGSuite Engine a team can work with its own documents on day one. On your own servers installation takes hours to days, depending on the IT environment. What usually takes longer is agreeing with data protection and the works council, choosing the sources and training. Plan a few weeks for that.
