Open source AI software: what’s open and what isn’t.
RAGSuite is open core. The core, the Community Edition, is open source under the Apache License 2.0: you may use it, change it and use it commercially. The features for company-wide governance live separately in the /ee directory under a commercial licence. The line is public and sits in the licence file, not in the small print. That makes RAGSuite an open source RAG system in which every line can be inspected.
Apache 2.0
One of the most widely used open-source licences. Commercial use allowed.
Public code
github.com/ragsuite/RAGSuite, public issues.
Public CLI
@ragsuite/ragsuite on npm, readable before you install.
Why should enterprise AI be open source?
With open source AI, one rule holds: what you can inspect, you don’t have to take on trust.
Verify, don’t trust.
AI touches your most sensitive data. With open code, your IT and data-protection teams see where data flows, instead of relying on a promise.
No lock-in.
You run the platform yourself, your data sits in your database and can be exported any time. If you want to leave, you can.
Independent of the vendor.
The code stays available even if something changes on our side. That’s the honest answer to “what if the vendor disappears?”.
Adapt it yourself.
With the REST API, webhooks, MCP and CLI you integrate RAGSuite into your systems, without waiting for a roadmap.
Three commands to your own server.
Installation uses the public CLI. Native by default, Docker if you prefer.
Then: web UI at http://localhost:9191, API at http://localhost:9090.
Prerequisites
Node 18+ (20/22 LTS recommended), npm, Git 2.30+ · macOS, Linux or Windows via WSL2/Git Bash · native mode also needs Python 3.14, Yarn 1.22+, PostgreSQL 15+ and Redis 7+ · Docker mode needs Docker with Compose v2 · check with ragsuite doctor.
$ npm install -g @ragsuite/ragsuite@latest $ ragsuite init # default: native $ ragsuite start ✔ web http://localhost:9191 ✔ api http://localhost:9090
ragsuite doctor: Mihaela takes a look with you.No phone-home? Check it yourself.
You don’t have to take our word for it. Your IT team can check the key claims like this:
Enterprise is activated offline too, with a signed licence key that is checked locally.

From Community to Cloud or Enterprise, when the move pays off.
As long as one team uses RAGSuite, everyone can have the same rights and you run it yourself, the Community Edition is enough. If you need more, there are two ways:
We run RAGSuite for you in a data centre in Germany, with the full feature set, in plans from €39 a month, credits included.
On your servers, air-gapped or as a dedicated instance: roles, Google sign-in, full audit logs, retention policies, model comparison and support. Upgrade without reinstalling via an offline key. Price on request.

Questions about RAGSuite open source AI.
Is RAGSuite really open source?
Yes. The Community Edition is under the Apache License 2.0, the code is public on GitHub and the CLI on npm. You may use it, change it and use it commercially. Only the Enterprise features live separately in the /ee directory under a commercial licence.
What does RAGSuite's open source AI cost?
The Community Edition is free, for unlimited users and projects, with no licence key. You only pay for your own infrastructure and, if you use one, your language model. RAGSuite Engine comes in plans from €39 a month; Enterprise is on request. There is no price per request.
Can we use RAGSuite commercially or run it for clients?
Yes. Apache 2.0 allows commercial use of the Community Edition, including running it for clients. Agencies and IT service providers can also join our free partner programme, with white-label in the cloud or at the client. The licence terms, such as keeping the licence notice, still apply.
Does RAGSuite send data to the vendor?
No. Self-hosted RAGSuite has no telemetry and calls no licence server. Enterprise is activated offline too, with a key checked locally. Because the code is public, your IT team can verify this themselves, for example by running it with outbound traffic blocked. There is no remote kill switch either.
How do we move from Community to Enterprise or to the Cloud?
To Enterprise without reinstalling: you activate an offline licence key with one CLI command; database, projects and sources stay. To RAGSuite Engine, you create an account and connect your sources. We personally help you move existing projects, so your team can keep working.
